The DMV Points System in VA for Traffic Tickets

What are the basics of VA DMV's Point System

Virginia DMV uses a point system to classify the records its drivers. Generally speaking, new Virginia drivers begin with a clean 0 point balance. Each year that passes, you are awarded +1 point until you reach a maximum of +5 points. A +5 driving record is the best record you can have in Virginia. Drivers who have reached a +5 driving record by not getting any moving violations in 5 years are often referred to as true plus 5's.

How Do I Lose Points on My DMV Record

Drivers lose points on their DMV records when they are convicted of any moving violation. VA moving violations can be separated into three categories: 3, 4, & 6 point violations. Meaning, when you are convicted of a 6 point violation you lose 6 points on your DMV driving record. On the other hand, there are a group of non-moving violation which don't carry a penalty of losing any DMV points. These are referred to as 0 point violations. This is why it is incredibly important to have an attorney who understand the DMV point system and can work to get your infraction amended to a charge that doesn't carry a point deduction or a less severe point deduction.

What Can Happen If I Lose Too Many DMV Points

The negative effects of rapid DMV point deduction can be severe. You can be placed on DMV probation where your license will be suspended 15 days for every new point you lose on your license during that period. Not to mention traffic convictions and point deductions can have dramatic effects on your insurance costs.
